Since its inception in 1882, its parent art of judo was separated from older systems of Japanese jujutsu by an important difference that was passed on to Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Brazilain Jiu Jitsu is not just a martial art it is also a sports, which promotes physical fitness, mental fitness, and builds character in young people. It ultimately becomes a way of life for most of its practitioners.
Karma Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a direct affiliate of the world famous Nova Uniao. Regarded as one of the top jiu jitsu academies in the world, Nova União has busted into MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) in the later years through fighters like Renan “Barão”, José Aldo, Jussier “Formiga” and many others. The team led by Wendell Alexander and André Pederneiras has been at the forefront of jiu jitsu and was regarded as one of the top 3 BJJ academies in the world at the turn of the millennium, with 2 team world titles by 2002. Since the shift to MMA, the dominance in the jiu jitsu world toned down, though Nova União is still considered to be one of the best academies in the game with very strong affiliated academies throughout the world such as Kimura in Natal (Brazil), Fernando Boi Team in Goiania (Brazil), Gustavo Dantas JJ Association (USA) and many others.

Karma Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has a long time legacy among the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & MMA community in the Toronto area. The first KARMA BJJ was started over 20 years ago by the mentors and trainers of Professor Vanja Vojvodic. Karma BJJ has a very significant and special meaning to Professor Vanja because it is the first academy he ever trained at, and at which he begun his martial arts journey.
With over 20 years of grappling experience on the mats, James is excited to bring his passion to Leaside and East York are. He is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt under legendary Wagnney Fabiano and world famous team Nova Uniao. A former Mixed Martial Arts fighter with a 4-1 cage record, James was sparring and training partner to Canada’s first UFC Champion (Carlos “The Ronin” Newton) James received his MMA Black Belt from Terry Riggs, a pioneer of MMA in Canada, and trainer to Carlos Newton and the IFL Dragons. James has trained & competed in several combat sports over the last 13 years, including Golden Gloves under Canadian Boxing legend Everton “COACHIE” McQwean, as well as competing in several Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournaments and winning the Provincial Title in 2006.
Having over 12 years of experience with both Adults and Kids, James brings a very motivating and encouraging style of teaching on the mats. With a strong focus on repetition and good rolling, he creates a safe mindful atmosphere where individuals can feel comfortable in, and forget their daily troubles. Having taught children and teens for several years James builds character and self confidence through discipline, work, and encouragement while at the same time teaching self defense and how to deescalate confrontational situations.
A regular student of the mats and still competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, you can catch James taking an extra class right beside his students. One of his favourite things to do is roll with all his students to see their progression, and where they need improvement. Karma Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a strong family and team. A value that James upholds and is proud of. Very Simple “Good People doing Good BJJ”
My martial arts career began at the age of 16, when my father brought me to Karma MMA (this name carries alot of significance in my life). I met Wagnney Fabiano and Joey Scardamaglia, my father signed me up for Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu that same night, and the rest is history. From that moment on my life has been defined by being a martial artist. I began my competitive career in amateur Muay Thai shortly after signing up for it and got a taste and hunger for competition. My first ever professional MMA fight was done without ever having an MMA fight. I amassed a winning record and decided to re-shape my focus and dedicate more of my time to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
I am a firm believer in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a great martial art for self defense, a greater well-being, and just more fun overall.
Being an active competitior in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, winning or medaling at the tournaments I know what it takes to compete at the highest level. My classes range from advanced techniques on Tuesday to more funamental techniques that are geared more towards the beginner student. I am a firm believer in lots of drilling of technique followed with great rolls
See you on the mats!
Daryoush first began training at the age of 14. Now a blue belt, training consistently, he has had decent success in local tournament amongst his peers. His focus is to compete internationally and persist to acquire the wisdom of his professors, on and off the mats.
10 years ago, Andrew walked into a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym for a trial class and was hooked ever since. Currently a purple belt, he started his BJJ journey under the Carlson Gracie lineage with a focus on proper technique, mastering the fundamentals and a steadfast dedication to learning. Aside from the obvious health benefits, BJJ has blessed Andrew with unshakable confidence outside of the gym, friends he will have for life and memories he will cherish forever. Today he is happy to continue his journey with Karma BJJ & Nova Uniao, learning from great masters and sharing his experiences with others.
